If you're interested in more such instances, I can try to dig up the article I read a while ago describing the frustration of Japanese jazz musicians in terms of identity, because many of them felt that you have to be American to be a real jazz musician. I can kind of see where they're coming from. The way the legendary American jazz pioneers are pictured give off a unique vibe. They are what they are, something new, creative and world culture content generators on the behalf of the US. I only learned in school (in Sweden, in music class) that jazz, r&b and rock were considered Black American music, and that White Americans resisted and looked down on Black American music of various kinds before they tried to make it their own. It's still book knowledge to me - it feels like anyone with eyes in their head (looking in from the outside) can see that those musicians (who also happened to be black) created something very American. Those music contributions are, in my opinion, America's finest national contribution to world fine culture. Any problems White Americans have taking pride in their country's cultural traditions and creations is kind of bizarre. I guess that just goes to show how important race is internally in the US.
